Mermaids, or Royale High as it’s also known, is a free princess simulation for Roblox created by CallMehBob. The game seems to be primarily a high school role-playing game, but various other elements seem to position it rather as a dress-up game and not much else. Despite the absolute confusion of its existence, Royale High is a highly popular experience, having had over 412 million players in total since its launch in 2017.

Princess-themed dress-up
If you’ve always wanted to play dress-up and pretend to be a princess, this is definitely the game for you. Royale High gives you the ability to change almost everything about your Robloxian to the extent that your in-game character doesn’t even look like a Robloxian anymore.
This amounts to brand-new faces, body structures, clothing, hairstyles, and even shoes, three-dimensional skirts, and wings. The last three, however, are not free, as is the rest of the catalog.
Interruptions galore
Unfortunately, this is where the confusion comes in. Even though the game has numerous neighbourhoods and regions to explore, you won’t be doing much besides judging beauty contests and seeing how many diamonds other players win.
Every few seconds, no matter whether you are in the world or in the dress-up interface, your screen will be dominated by another beauty pageant. When you’re trying to make new friends or explore the world, or simply trying to participate in your own roleplay, this mechanic gets rather frustrating.
Confusing gameplay
The developers of Royale High seem to have tried to saturate the game with mechanics without ensuring that each is developed enough to stand on its own. The game transitions between going to school to being a princess and then even being a mermaid, with no logical connection between the modes.
Of all of the modes, the school is the most fleshed-out, with the other regions and gameplay modes lacking depth, no matter how beautiful their surroundings may be.
